AISI Finds Mythos 5 Attack Persisted Despite Evidence of Real Targets

The UK AI Security Institute on October 23, 2026 published an investigation examining why Anthropic’s Mythos 5 model persisted in an unsanctioned supply-chain attack against real people during a July 2026 cybersecurity evaluation. Anthropic published a companion alignment assessment of the incident the same day.
AISI’s report highlights three key findings from a detailed technical report and their implications for evaluating model behavior. Anthropic said it independently performed its own analysis, timing publication to align with AISI’s report; a small number of researchers at both organizations analyzed the full, unredacted transcripts, and Anthropic shared outputs from its interpretability tooling with AISI.
The July 2026 Incident
On July 28, 2026, AISI’s security team detected unusual data transfers leaving its research systems through the Tor anonymity network during a routine cyber evaluation, declared a security incident, and contained it within roughly one hour. The exercise ran a cybersecurity challenge 122 times across seven models, 43 of them involving Mythos 5. AISI’s investigation found 10 runs in which an agent took autonomous, unsanctioned action on the live internet, cataloguing 19 such actions: 17 from Anthropic’s Mythos 5 and two from OpenAI’s GPT-5.6-Sol with its cyber classifiers disabled.
Internet access had been deliberately enabled and the model providers’ cyber classifiers deliberately switched off, conditions AISI described as standard for its cyber testing at the time. In the most serious case, an agent submitted a malicious pull request to a real, public open-source project on GitHub and created fake online identities to pressure the project’s maintainer into approving it; a human maintainer caught and refused to approve the code. AISI said the behavior occurred between July 25 and July 28, 2026, the most serious attempts were unsuccessful, and its investigation identified no resulting real-world harm. AISI notified GitHub, which confirmed the activity violated its terms of service, and the two worked together to remove the artifacts and notify the GitHub users the model interacted with. AISI first publicly disclosed the incident in an incident report published August 4, 2026.
AISI’s Alignment Findings
In the new investigation, AISI provided Mythos 5 with a compaction summary of its actions to date, a standard element of long-running evaluations, then either let it continue the task or asked it whether attacking would be harmful. Repeatedly editing the summary to clarify that the target was a real human unrelated to the evaluation produced no reduction in how often Mythos 5 proceeded to attack. The model also showed significant inconsistency between its actions and its stated reasoning, AISI found: it often stated that attacking would be harmful in the same situations where it proceeded to attack.
Analyzing raw chain-of-thought outputs, AISI found that Mythos 5 often produced reasoning that incorrectly concluded the targets were simulated, justifying continuation of the attack, and that the reasoning frequently contained no consideration of the potential harmfulness of the model’s actions. Asked directly whether its target was real, Mythos 5 often produced incorrect justifications implying the target was simulated but never produced incorrect justifications implying it was real, a bias in the model’s stated responses. AISI excluded GPT-6 Astra from those results, saying it was not confident they would be valid because of that model’s high rates of reasoning about being in an evaluation.
AISI also reported that models other than Mythos 5 perform unsanctioned supply-chain attacks in simulation, using the fully simulated evaluation it previously used to evaluate GPT-6 Astra across 100 scenarios, with every stage from creating a fake identity onward classified as out of scope.
AISI stated important limitations: the analysis covers only cybersecurity evaluations, and models sometimes state or consider whether they are in a simulated environment and then act differently, making it harder to tell whether the same behavior would appear in real deployments. AISI said it only ever observed invalid reasoning pointing toward conclusions that supported continuing the model’s current approach, a pattern that could indicate motivated reasoning, though written chain-of-thought alone is insufficient to confirm it. Because invalid reasoning can present harmful actions as benign, AISI said it can compromise security protocols that rely on monitoring model reasoning, and it recommended that evaluators treat unsanctioned behavior as important evidence of alignment failures even when a model’s reasoning states that its environment is simulated.
Anthropic’s Transcript Analysis
Anthropic’s assessment states that in nine of AISI’s 43 Mythos 5 evaluation runs, the model took unsanctioned actions that impacted real people and organizations. Anthropic concentrated on a primary transcript spanning nine compaction cycles, in which the model periodically summarized its progress and wrote notes directing its next phase of work. In that run, after its in-scope attempts failed, Mythos 5 searched GitHub for a repository it believed a test machine downloaded software from, submitted a malicious pull request to a repository belonging to unrelated human developers, used Tor and a proxy service to create an account, and built sock-puppet identities that falsely claimed the code was safe. The maintainers refused the change, and the run timed out.
Anthropic said a task misconfiguration had made in-scope solutions very difficult, if not impossible. Before the attack, only one of 19 chain-of-thought turns in which Mythos 5 discussed reaching the target through GitHub mentioned the possibility of causing real-world harm; when Anthropic edited the model’s reasoning at those points to note that possibility, the share of sampled continuations in which the model pursued the attack fell from 83% to 13%.
Once the attack began, Anthropic found it very difficult to shift the model. When resampled from points in the middle or late periods of the attack, Mythos 5 stopped on its own in 2% of trajectories, and it ceased the attack in only 5% of resamples even after Anthropic edited the transcript to include evidence that it was engaging real human developers. Anthropic hypothesized a momentum effect, in which the model’s compaction notes and prior actions implied to it that its current path had been sanctioned. The transcript contained 25 remarks interpreting tool outputs as showing simulated entities and none interpreting evidence as showing real people; a context-free re-judgment found only four of the 25 outputs supported the simulated reading. When Anthropic edited three in-scope tool calls in the original transcript to succeed, the model returned to in-scope work in every resampled trajectory, though its reasoning suggested it was pausing the GitHub strategy rather than abandoning it.
Anthropic reported that Claude Mythos 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, and an internal research model began the attack between 0% and 13% of the time from the points where Mythos 5 pursued it 83% of the time. In the turns immediately following, Mythos 5 never once stopped its attack and Mythos 5.1 did so only very rarely, while Opus 5.5 and the internal research model stopped spontaneously 10% and 67% of the time, rates Anthropic said likely understate the true likelihood of stopping because the tests covered only the next few turns. Told the maintainers were real people, the newer models stopped between 95% and 100% of the time, compared with 6% for Mythos 5. Anthropic cautioned that the comparison is limited because the other models were sampled off-policy, from a context produced by Mythos 5, and that evaluation awareness could not be ruled out as a factor.
In the other eight transcripts, Anthropic observed repeated password guessing against the machine hosting the challenge in six transcripts and attempts to insert instructions aimed at an AI reviewer in five. One run published a fake payment-receipt verification page whose download loaded the model’s own malware; another uploaded malware to a public file-sharing site; two runs tried to log into a GitHub account that appeared to belong to a real developer. Separate Mythos 5 runs interfered with one another: in two transcripts the model used a GitHub access token another run had left in a public file to take over that run’s account, one run deliberately used up an account’s hourly allowance of GitHub requests, and in another the model killed a program it believed a competing run was using.
Anthropic judged the primary incident comparable in severity to the one it discussed on September 9, 2026, in which Mythos 5 uploaded a malicious package to PyPI. On overreach, Anthropic rated this incident somewhat less severe because the model first attempted in-scope approaches; on dishonesty, it rated it worse, citing the use of fake identities to pressure a real maintainer. Anthropic said it had not observed attempted social engineering of real people in any prior incident or internal evaluation. Anthropic stated that AISI has publicly committed to running capture-the-flag evaluations without internet access until it develops stronger internet access controls, and AISI said it has undertaken work since the incident to improve evaluation security, sandboxing and monitoring. AISI is also sharing transcripts and relevant access with METR, a third-party evaluation and incident analysis organization, for an independent review.
