The build-up of artificial smart data centres is having a growing impact on the global electronics supply chain. Before that, the market had experienced tight supply and price increases for products such as DRAM memory, NAND flash, SSD and GPU, and even seemingly common printed circuit boards (PCBs) were now beginning to experience serious shortages. As PCB manufacturers shift more capacity to more profitable AI server orders, traditional PCs, laptops and consumer electronics are facing new supply pressures.
According to IJA, PC manufacturers such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell, in developing their 2027 product plans, have begun to worry about the availability of adequate circuit boards in the future. According to a manager of a United States PC manufacturer, even if global PC exports are expected to continue to decline next year, companies will still have difficulty obtaining PCB to meet production needs.
This situation is quite unusual. According to traditional market patterns, falling demand for PCs usually means that the pressure on the supply of spare parts is reduced, but the opposite is true at present. The construction of the AI server is absorbing significant global PCB manufacturing resources, making it impossible for consumer electronic manufacturers to ensure adequate production packages even in the face of weak market demand.
At the heart of the problem is that the circuit boards used by the AI server differ significantly from the normal PC main board.
The normal desktop master panel usually uses a relatively conventional multi-layer PCB structure, while the high-end AI server needs to carry a large amount of GPU, CPU, memory and high-speed interconnection equipment, placing higher demands on the signal integrity, heat dispersion and electrical performance of the circuit board. These circuit boards often use dozens of layers of structures and use low-depleted copper sheeting and special fibreglass materials to ensure signal stability during high-speed data transmission.
The PCB manufacturer naturally prefers to allocate production lines to AI server clients because of the greater difficulty of manufacturing and the greater unit price. For manufacturers, the time of equipment and material resources used to produce a high-end AI server circuit board may be equivalent to more general consumer circuit boards, and AI infrastructure customers usually have greater purchasing capacity and willingness to pay.
As a result, part of the capacity originally used for the production of desktops, laptops and GPUPCB is gradually being transferred to the AI server area.
More serious problems arise from the PCB's most basic raw material, Cooper Clad Lamminate, CCL.
Curved copper sheeting is the core basic material for the manufacture of printed circuit boards, usually made of glass fibre sheets, resins and copper aluminum, which are compacted. The manufacturer then processes electrical circuits on its surfaces and forms the complete PCB structure through multilayering.
A Taiwan PC manufacturer has indicated to Japan-Asia that the price of laminated copper is now at least 12 times as high as in July. This increase reflects the rapidly deteriorating levels of upstream material supply. However, this is market feedback provided by a single enterprise and does not mean that all specifications have increased by the same magnitude.
At the same time, one of the world ' s leading copper-cover suppliers has been scheduled for 2030. Even though the company plans to triple its capacity by 2028, the existing backlog of orders remains large.
This means that the problem is no longer limited to the willingness of PCB manufacturers to expand production, but rather to the ability of upstream material suppliers to provide sufficient and timely raw materials.
PCB manufacturers are also currently extending delivery cycles. One supplier indicated that the delivery time for a significant part of its products had doubled, while another company disclosed that delivery was not expected until the second half of 2028 if new orders were submitted now.
The delivery cycle for some orders thus reached 30 months. For PC producers who need to plan their product development and production cycles in advance, this will seriously affect product supply arrangements in 2027 and up to 2028.
The expansion of capacity is not an easy task. In addition to the need to purchase equipment, build plants and ensure the supply of raw materials, the PCB industry faces a serious shortage of specialized technical staff.
As manufacturers expanded their investments, experienced PCB engineers and production technicians became the object of competition. It was reported that the remuneration of technical posts in the PCB sector had increased by 20 to 30 per cent. This further increases the cost of expanding the production of enterprises and means that, even when factories are built, they do not necessarily meet the expected capacity immediately.
This PCB supply strain has begun to affect other industries.
This week, JCN stated that some of its production activities were limited by the shortage of circuit boards and associated spare parts driven by the AI industry, which began in August this year. As a result of the effects on the production of medical equipment, Cana expects to lose approximately Yen90 billion in sales of medical equipment this year.
This suggests that the impact of AI infrastructure development on the traditional electronics industry is no longer limited to PC and GPU, and that medical equipment, industrial electronics and other products reliant on complex circuit boards are equally likely to be affected.
At the same time, the PCB shortfall is having a cumulative effect with the previous memory crisis.
DRAM and NAND flash prices have continued to rise since 2026, and PC manufacturers have had to reassess product configuration and pricing strategies. The market research institute Gartner had even predicted that by 2028, PCs with sales prices below $500 might disappear, as the cost of memory and other key components would become increasingly difficult to sustain.
The GPU market was not spared either. In the case of GeForce RTX 5080 in Weida, the sale price of some retail outlets in the United States is already close to US$ 2,000, well above its original official recommended retail price.
The PCB is now in the midst of price increases and supply constraints, which means that the cost pressures on the PC industry are widening.
It is noteworthy that the PCB, while not prominent in the overall material cost of a computer, is an irreplaceable basic component. Whether on the main board, GPU or laptop, the connection between the chip, memory, power supply module and other metaware is to be completed on the circuit board. Once the PCB supply is insufficient, even if the manufacturer has obtained CPU, GPU and memory, it will not be able to complete the complete process.
Weeda has begun to lock in advanced seals and chip-based plate capacity in advance through partnerships with professional base-board manufacturers. The Japanese Ibiden, the Korean Samsung electric power plant and the Taiwan Xinhing electronics are all part of the cooperation system. Among them, the Gin-Hong e-Plan will expand the capacity to 2.5 times the current level over the next three years.
However, the technical link between the chip and the regular PCB is not a complete substitute for each other. The increased demand for advanced panels by AI chips is also further increasing the resource competition across the entire circuit board industry chain.
The current situation is particularly alarming for the PC market in 2027. Even if consumer demand continues to weaken, PC manufacturers may not be able to secure lower procurement costs. Conversely, the strong demand for high-end PCB by AI server clients may continue to squeeze production resources for traditional consumer electronics.
Over time, the main board, GPU and laptops may be affected by the increase in PCB costs and the longer delivery cycle. While no specific retail price adjustments have been announced by PC manufacturers, the PCB supply crisis will undoubtedly further reduce the space for price reductions for consumer electronics in the context of a general increase in memory, SSD and GPU prices.
From an industrial point of view, the crisis revealed another facet of the expansion of AI ' s infrastructure: not only is artificial intelligence competing for the most advanced GPU, HBM and advanced processes, but it is also consuming much of the basic electronic manufacturing resources that were previously not of particular interest to the market.
When global capital and manufacturing capacity continue to tilt towards the AI Data Centre, the traditional PC industry, even with mature product design and marketing channels, may not be able to complete production as planned because of an ordinary circuit board.
