export PAT="<pat>"export BASE_URL="<base_url>"export OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT='{ "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json", "model": "snowflake-cortex/openai-gpt-5.4", "small_model": "snowflake-cortex/openai-gpt-5.4", "provider": { "snowflake-cortex": { "options": { "baseURL": "${BASE_URL}", "account": "<ACCOUNT>.snowflakecomputing.com", "apiKey": "<PAT>", "headers": { "snow-agent-name": "opencode" } } } }}'
Cortex AI Gateway

In 2026, what substantive breakthroughs will AI agent make in enterprise-level applications? Click to download the White Paper " AI 2026 and Data Development Forecasts " and learn that experts look ahead and embrace new ways of working!
Over the past few years, the Enterprise AI technology warehouse has evolved into a highly complex, fragmented and unmanageable ecosystem. Today, this technology warehouse covers a variety of components, such as vector databases, surveillance systems, Pipeline, and interfaces with the Agent, embedded Agent, and model context protocol (MCP) servers that interface with enterprise systems. The combination of models that support this is also changing and is updated almost every few weeks. The introduction of different components in the technology warehouse by different teams at their own pace may result in management and governance gaps that affect security.
In such a fragmented environment, very few enterprises have access to sufficiently comprehensive context information to respond accurately to the fundamental questions at all levels: What models are we using? Who's calling these models? What are they doing? What are the associated costs?
Faced with this situation, the instinctive response of an enterprise tends to be more restrictive, but this is not a viable long-term solution. Limiting the ability of employees to use AI will only encourage them to turn to unauthorized AI tools, thereby further increasing the risk.
The source of this gap is not the problem of tools, but the lack of a critical layer. A modern AI technology warehouse requires a control node, located between each AI client and the enterprise system that they visit. Cortex AI Gateway (which is in the public preview phase) provides the required unified visibility, governance capacity and oversight mechanisms for modern and diversified infrastructure by serving as this centralized control plane. In our view, the AI infrastructure technology warehouse of modern enterprises must have six main elements:
- Unified and governed model reasoning
- Dynamic model route
- MCP and Tool Governance
- Centrally observable
- Security strategy and fence.
- Cost management and control
Cortex AI Gateway is now in the public preview phase. The Platform team can attribute and control expenditure through the Unified Access Grant Model and access to permission by the MCP server and understand what AI has done on behalf of the user. The application team can be developed through a single endpoint. Next, we will describe how it covers all levels of technology.
Cortex AI Gateway is a centralized control plane built by Snowflake for the enterprise AI infrastructure. It provides governance model reasoning, dynamic model paths, MCP tool governance, observability, security fences and cost control capabilities through a single endpoint, allowing the platform team to view the performance of all AI clients and Agents in the organization.
Unified and governed model reasoning: Let Agent access the model through a single endpoint
One of the first problems with the expansion of the AI technology warehouse is that there are too many models to access: one engineer configures the programming of Agent as a provider to connect to one model, the platform team connects applications to another, and others call a third home through scripts. Each access path has an independent voucher, log and bill.
Cortex AI Gateway consolidates these access paths into a single endpoint. It achieved Chat Comppletions API for Open AI, Grok, GLM, Gemini, Llama, Mistral and DeepSeek models, and Messages API for Claude. Both agreements have become the mainstream standard in model service areas. Fluid transmission, tool call, structured output, Prompt cache, image input and reasoning functions all operate in the same way as the original interface. Therefore, to get an existing client into Cortex AI Gateway, only one new base URL and one token should be configured. Support for Open AI Reponses API is about to be launched. The following example shows all the settings needed to configure OpenCode using Cortex AI Gateway:
export PAT="<pat>"export BASE_URL="<base_url>"export OPENCODE_CONFIG_CONTENT='{ "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json", "model": "snowflake-cortex/openai-gpt-5.4", "small_model": "snowflake-cortex/openai-gpt-5.4", "provider": { "snowflake-cortex": { "options": { "baseURL": "${BASE_URL}", "account": "<ACCOUNT>.snowflakecomputing.com", "apiKey": "<PAT>", "headers": { "snow-agent-name": "opencode" } } } }}'
Access control follows the existing Role-based Access Control (RBAC) framework of Snowflake. Administrators can configure models provided through Gateway to ensure that users can only access models approved by the organization.
To further simplify the integration of programming Agent and Cortex AI Gateway, Snowflake CLI will automatically complete the configuration of traffic via Gateway. Only one command is required to read the certificate from the currently valid Snowflake connection, inject it into the configuration file for the programming Agent, and start Agent, where the flow is routed through Cortex AI Gateway. For example, now use Snowflake CLI to start OpenCode, just run the snow ai opencode.
Dynamic model path in Cortex AI Gateway: Select the appropriate model for each task
Most teams are used to a single front-line model for all tasks. This is a reasonable starting point, but as the scale of application increases, costs become high. Many of the steps implemented by Agent were in fact only document editing, formatting adjustments and information queries, and lower-cost models were equally able to perform these tasks with considerable quality and accuracy.
The dynamic model route function that will open private previews through Cortex AI Gateway will enable each step of the Agent mission to select from the available models the lowest cost model that can reliably perform the current mission. The Snowflake research team fine-tuned this function to enable low complexity and repetitive tasks to be handled by high-efficiency models, while tasks requiring in-depth reasoning were performed by forward models. In one internal assessment, when completing the dbt Pipeline load, the efficiency of the token increased to a maximum of three times in comparable quality compared to the programme using only the front-line model; in another independent programming test, the engineering team reduced token usage by about 25 per cent, while maintaining Pull Request's throughput. These results are expected to translate into real cost savings for enterprises.
Dynamic routers follow the same governance rules as manual selection models. The system only uses an approved model, adheres to existing data presence settings and records each route decision, allowing the compliance team to see which request was handled by which model. As route logic is located in Cortex AI Gateway, rather than within the application, Snowflake can adjust route decision-making as model prices and performance change, without changing the Agent configuration.
Open source models also play an important role here. In the ADE-bench evaluation using Snowflake CoCoco as the Agent test framework, DeepSeek-V4-Flash achieved 74.4%, exceeding the leading proprietary model we tested. GLM-5.3 is also about to enter the private preview phase, while its predecessor model GLM-5.2 achieved 66 per cent of the ADE-bench assessment and is the lowest token consumption model in the benchmark test, which is the characteristic of the high-volume load. Snowflake provides the services of these models within its secure borders, so that the reasoning can be implemented in the vicinity of the governance data and under the uniform management of the existing RBAC and audit tracking mechanisms.
MCP and tool governance: controls Agent 's actions
Once Agent is able to access the tool, it becomes an executive subject in the enterprise system, and MCP makes the realization of this capability an exceptionally simple one. The installation of an unmanaged MCP server by an employee amounts to the addition of a new access path to the production system, and the software using this path determines how to use the access permission when running. It is a shadow IT, except that these unauthorized software can also access the production database and modify the records in the SAAS system.
API Gateway needs to judge whether a client has access to the specified endpoint. The tool gateway has to answer another question: At this point, does this Agent have the authority to execute this tool call on behalf of the user?
The Tools function in Cortex AI Gateway provided a solution to this problem after Snowflake acquired Natoma. This feature is currently in the private preview phase, with a filtered MCP server directory containing more than 100 MCP servers and processing OAuth authorizations for servers for users, which will help to reduce the problem of the disorderly expansion of MCP servers.
Administrators can choose to enable specific tools, all currently publish tools, or all current and future publish tools. Unenabled tools are invisible to clients and cannot be called. As a result, prohibited capabilities are usually not exposed to clients at all, rather than waiting for actual calls before returning to failure. The system can also record the tool call log, which links the complete Agent execution process triggered by the same Prompt into a continuous sequence of operations. tool call will also write Span to the same Trace Table as the model reasoning, so that a single Trace also covers the reasoning process and the operation.
This audit tracking mechanism can help to prevent specific attacks on the tool layer. Tool Poisoning, Tool Shadowing, and the Rug Pull attack may have occurred without the end user's knowledge. For example, in the Rug Pull attack, the approved server might quietly update the definition of the tool to malicious content, and the client would automatically access the changes. Such attacks are designed to be difficult to detect by end users, but they are not invisible to the systems that record each tool definition and every call.
Observability: view Agent's running trajectory at a unified location
When businesses are asked which Agent is visiting their systems, in most cases the real answers that can be given are often from an outdated Agent list form. A survey conducted by us also confirms this phenomenon: about one third of the clients interviewed use self-developed internal dashboards to achieve Agent visibility.
A survey by the Cloud Security Alliance found that 82 per cent of organizations in the past year had found at least one AI Agent or autonomous workflow that had previously been unknown to the security or IT team. In addition, according to the 2026 Data Leak Costs Report, the average cost of data leaking by organizations with higher shadow AI usage amounted to $5.39 million, while 43 per cent of organizations with data leaks were affected by shadow AI events.
The common response is to add monitoring sites to each client, but this approach has a fundamental problem: Businesses cannot bury undiscovered customers.
Cortex AI Gateway uses another path to construct observability directly at the model service level. Whether it runs on the developer's local laptop or is deployed on the remote Kubernetes cluster, the system will record it as OpenTelemetry Span in Snowflake as long as its model calls or MCP tool call passes Gateway. As a result, without changing the Agent code, the enterprise is able to fully view the performance while running across third parties.
These Span will write to AGENT TRACE TABLE according to OpenTelemetry Generating AI syntax. Each record contains the model, number of input and output token requested, cache reading and writing status, execution time, status code, MCP server and tool information, as well as the client that initiated the call, including even client versions and session information.
The system records the input and output of Prompt, the response, and tool call only after the administrator has enabled the Payload Capture (request and response content capture) function. Once enabled, these text data are stored inside Snowflake and protected by the existing access control mechanisms of the organization. Since telemetry data are directly included in the client's own event forms, such as AGENT TRACE TABLE, they remain strictly within the customer's Snowflake security boundary.
Cortex AI Gateway can also receive OTLP Trace from the client side through its own peer. By viewing both the service and the client ' s Trace, the enterprise is able to obtain the observable capabilities required for in-depth analysis of Agent ' s behaviour.
By way of Coco, only one Prompt user can investigate telemetry data from AGENT TRACE TABLE. The following examples illustrate how the decline in cache hit rates can be found and the opportunity to reduce model costs.
Safety and security: protect critical system access Noodles.
Agentic AI expanded the attack in a completely new way, with the most direct evidence coming from security incidents that have given rise to widespread concern over the past few months.
It is easy to draw the conclusion from these events that the security fence is an essential part of the safe AI technology warehouse. The fence should be deployed at the border that Agent has to go through, not inside the Agent, because Agent's own ability to judge could well become the point of failure.
Snowflake Cortex AI Guardrails has been able to provide operational protection to Coco, Snowflake CoWork and Cortex Agents against Prompt injection and escape attacks. It can scan tool outputs, identify indirect Prompt injections that attempt to overwhelm system commands; detect behaviour that circumvents model secure boundaries; and detect in real time patterns of attack that have not previously occurred.
Cortex AI Gateway is about to introduce this infrastructure into Gateway traffic. At that time, the range of protection will be extended from Snowflake ' s own AI product to all third-party Agent and Agent operating frames via Gateway route, thereby minimizing exposure to attack surfaces.
Cost management: value each AI expenditure
In 2026, AI expenditure put a great deal of pressure on the budgets of many enterprises, but the real problem is that cost projections are inaccurate rather than simply excessive. At the same time, there is a phenomenon known as tokenmaxing, where token usage is seen as a measure of productivity.
Some companies had an internal publish ranking, but eventually had to close it because users deliberately increased AI spending in order to achieve higher ranking on the list. It was quickly realized that higher token usage usually did not mean higher return on investment (ROI).
To address this problem, Snowflake expanded the existing cost-control capacity to Cortex AI Gateway.
Budgets (budget) provides a mature cost-control mechanism and now applies to all AI traffic through Cortex AI Gateway. The ability to achieve detailed controls depends largely on the configuration of the administrator.
The budget could be set at the Gateway level to achieve more finer particle size control; it could also allow for the flexible allocation and management of costs according to the required dimensions through resource and user labels. Cortex AI Gateway will support the cost visibility and control of all the dimensions described above, whether by department, role, cost centre, user ID, Agent or application.
The user-level quota allows the administrator to set a monthly limit for each user, as well as an optional daily limit, and to enforce the excess blockage within minutes.
The use of the Gateway traffic will be recorded in AI GATEWAY USAGE HISTORY, which contains a breakdown of Credit consumption by model and a request ID that can be directly associated with AGENT TRACE TABLE. With these data, the enterprise can carefully track which Agent Dialogue, workflow, Mission, Model Request and tool call caused the costs to run out of control.
CoCo provides an easy way to help users in-depth analysis of Trace data and a better understanding of AI cost components.
How to start using Cortex AI Gateway
